Cuanza Norte: Police shoot and three people die in demonstration demanding better working.

 Three people died out of a total of eight people hit by firearm shots, by the National Police, inside the Caculo Cabaça Hydroelectric Project, in Cuanza Norte, when trying to control a wave of protests by workers who were vandalizing property, for alleged non-compliance. of the points of the claim sheet presented to the Chinese company carrying out the works. 

One of the injured died on the spot, the second in a medical center in the city of Ndalatando and a third, according to the police statement, lost his life at the Josina Machel Hospital, in Luanda. Eight different vehicles, electrical generators, office supplies, refrigerators, electrical cables, doors and windows are some of the assets that, according to the Provincial Police Command in Cuanza Norte, were destroyed by workers during the protests inside the Chinese company CGGC- China Gezhouba Group Company Limited. The reason for the demonstration followed by acts of protest and vandalism of property, on the 25th, is related to the non-compliance with the points of the claim book presented by the employer. 

The police also said that the day after the protests, workers, dissatisfied with the attitude of the company’s management, in about 400, intended to attack the physical integrity of Chinese citizens. “Given this scenario of confrontation, the forces deployed to maintain order in the place, after exhausting the techniques of expression to contain tempers and, due to the deficit in the correlation of forces, were involved by the protesters with sharp objects, fact that motivated the use of firearms, with some shots hitting (08) citizens, of whom (02) died, one on the spot and another at the Josina Machel Hospital in Luanda”, reads the document in which the Police already guarantees have opened an inquiry to establish the facts and the consequent criminal liability of those involved. 

One of the protesters, who was speaking to Rádio Nacional, explains that the disagreement between workers and management dates back to 2019, over the improvement of working conditions. As there was no consensus on the alleged lack of financial conditions for the improvement of working conditions and a salary increase, on the part of the companies, the workers decided to go on strike and five days after their declaration of the strike, they learned that the management had hired another 90 citizens who continued the work. In an attempt to ascertain the veracity of the information, a group of about 400 workers came across a police barrier, 20 meters from the company, which received them with gunshots. 

The Caculo Cabaça hydroelectric project, under construction under the Kwanza River, in the municipality of Cambambe, Kwanza Norte province, was launched in 2017, to produce 2,172 Megawatts (MW), after completion. 

With the completion scheduled for 2024, the construction of the project in charge of the company China Gezhouba Group Company Limited, includes about 980 workers, including freelancers and expatriates.
